CHAA SUNDARI:  The scheme aims to provide pucca dwelling houses to the permanent tea garden workers of closed/sick tea gardens who do not have pucca houses of their own by way of allotment through construction of dwelling units on lands in the tea gardens. Housing Department is constructing the dwelling units. Each single storied dwelling unit (pucca house with CGI sheeting roof) consists of two rooms, one kitchen, one toilet and verandah (covered area of 394 Sq. Ft.). Offsite infrastructure like electricity, water supply and social infrastructure are being provided by the concerned departments like Irrigation, WBSEDCL, PHE, etc. The concerned DMs prepare the verified list of the prospective beneficiaries in consultation with Labour Department.

In Phase-I, construction of 1,171 single storied dwelling units at 06 sites was completed in December’2022 out of the State Fund and inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Government of West Bengal on 19/01/2023.

In Phase-II, works are going on for construction of 2851 single storied dwelling units in 11 sites covering 6 Tea Gardens in Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri districts out of the funds being provided under Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) for 2023-24 implemented by Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. In this phase, each single storied dwelling unit is being provided with land admeasuring approx. 360 sq. ft. adjacent to the house for Cattle rearing.

CHAA SUNDARI Extension Scheme:

The Scheme has been introduced with the objective to provide financial assistance to poor tea Garden workers for the construction of a pucca house (minimum of 25 Sqm. area) with basic amenities. Financial assistance of Rs. 1.20 lakh per beneficiary is being provided to the eligible beneficiaries from the State fund.

The Scheme is being implemented by the Panchayat & Rural Development Department of this Government, who is the nodal Department, with funds being provided by Housing Department out of its state budget account. The 1st instalment of Rs. 60,000/- will be released as advance. On completion of construction up to the Windowsill level, 2nd instalment of Rs. 40,000/- will be released to the beneficiary. The 3rd instalment of Rs. 20,000/- will be released after full completion of the house.
